Effective management of accounts for an employee who is also a student.
Procedure
- Identifying employee and student accounts.
- Which account(s) require which set of credentials.
- Keeping employee and student accounts separate.
Tips
- Microsoft manages both accounts, and only one account can be active at a time.
Your My MC1 Login is an SSO (Single Sign-On) managed by Microsoft. It allows you to access all your logins using the same credentials quickly. Instead of logging into everything one at a time, you can log into one, and the credentials will carry over to the others. This is why you can only use one account per browser. The SSO login page looks identical for My MC Portal, Email, Canvas, and Office 365. The page has a picture of the Midland College Campus flag poles on the left and the login fields (email address and password) on the right.
- Institutional Email
- Every user has ONE account flagged as their institution email.
- The institution email is used to log into My MC Portal and Employee Time Management/J1 Web.
- This email is the only account with access to My MC Portal or Employee Time Management/J1 Web.
- In My MC Portal, employees can access their student information and resources when logging in with their employee credentials, and students can view their former employment information when logging in with their student credentials.
- While employed with Midland College, the employee email is the institution email. Before and after employment, the student email is the institution email.

Keeping Accounts Separate
Microsoft manages both accounts, and only one account can be active at a time.
- Use Multiple Browsers (Recommended)
This may be the simplest method. All Midland College computers have three web browsers available: Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox. You may log into your employee account while using one browser (Microsoft Edge, for example) and your student account while using another (Google Chrome, for example), and the two will not interfere with one another.
- Log Out After Use
This method will take a little more time and effort but is effective. If you are using one account, you must log out completely before you can use the other account. Once logged out, you may need to close the browser and then reopen it to finish the process.
- Use Google Chrome Multiple Profiles
This method is the most complex of the three, but it does give you the most control. Google Chrome is capable of managing multiple profiles all on its own.
- In the top-right corner of your Google Chrome browser bar, click the circle to the right of the three vertical dots.
- Sign into the browser with your employee account.
- Click the same circle to the right of the three vertical dots again.
- Choose a name, photo, and color scheme.
- If you choose to sync your Google Account, your profile name will automatically be your account name.
- Click + Add at the bottom of the menu.
- Sign into the new browser window with your student account.
- Choose a different name, photo, and color scheme.
- While this method uses Google Chrome only, the different profiles and Chrome windows allow the accounts to be kept separate.
- You do not have to use a different window for each login. You may use different tabs within the same browser window for logins that use the same credentials (Employee window, My MC Portal tab, Webmail, Employee Time Management tab or Student Window, Student Email tab, Canvas tab, Library Database tab).
- Do Not Use Student Login Links from My MC Portal When Logged in as an Employee
If you are trying to access Canvas, your student email, or your student Office 365 account, do not use a link in the MC Portal, while you are logged into MC Portal as an employee. As previously stated, both your employee and student accounts are managed by Microsoft and only one can be active at a time. If you are signed into MC Portal with your employee credentials and you click on a link for Canvas, your browser will automatically try to sign into Canvas with your employee credentials, likely resulting in an error due to a failed login attempt.
- Access Canvas, Student Email, and Office 365 Directly (Without Logging into My MC Portal)
- Go to www.midland.edu.
